Many hours of therapy are spent rehashing the past, looking for sanity in insane experiences, hunting for perpetrators and victims, justification for our misery and blame. We are so attached to our histories. We believe we are our history. We believe we can find meaning there, make sense of our misery. That is insane. Psychotherapy used to understand yourself by exploring your past and trying to understand your suffering will never have an end. You can’t get clean by swimming in a dirty river.
How would it be to go forward, just forward without dragging the past behind, freed up to be exactly what we were created to be, fresh and new every moment…ahhh that’s the ticket. Self reflection can be good and is essential. If it leads you to any type of pain or suffering like guilt, judgment, or blame it isn’t useful. It merely pulls you further away from Truth. If however your inner quiet time finds you a friend a guide a remembrance of your eternal goodness and the love for you that has always been there, ahhh, yes, that’s the ticket, the ticket home.
Don’t let thoughts keep you from boarding the plane. Leave the pain and suffering thoughts behind in the terminal. Take no luggage. Calm your mind and let peace in. There is no magic about it. It doesn’t require anything except willingness and the dedication of some time. Calm yourself. Be in stillness and ask for help. Then just listen with expectation. You don’t need anything special; no initiations, no monastery, no “sacred site,” no candles, incense, mantras. Nothing is required except your desire. Train your mind to be still and listen. Don’t beat it up. Be gentle and kind. Don’t tolerate the tyranny of the ego which would undermine your efforts by hijacking your intentions. Stay on course.
